RETINAL SURGERY

Retinal surgery can correct various retinal and posterior segment pathologies, including: epiretinal membrane , macular hole , retinal detachment , severe diabetic retinopathy with vitreous hemorrhage . It is also possible to correct the most common intra- and post-operative complications of cataract surgery, such as lens dislocation .
Surgical techniques on the retina, although different between individual interventions, all use the same surgical instruments: the retina is accessed with three small instruments with a caliber equal to (or even smaller than) 0.45 millimeters , ensuring the least possible invasiveness and the fastest post-operative recovery times.
Vitrectomy is necessary for any retinal surgery, that is, the removal of the vitreous body , the transparent gel that fills the eye. Depending on the type of surgery and the condition of the retina, it may be advisable to replace this gel with a water -like solution, with gases (spontaneously reabsorbed) or with silicone oils (which may subsequently require surgical removal).
The surgical interventions are performed at the headquarters of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano "Capitanio" in Via Mercalli 28 - 20122 Milan
